The Bill's Blues Troll The Blues Troll is a unique artifact, even by the colorful standards of Chicago Blues folklore. Designed by David Dunning, Chicago master puppeteer and outsider artist, The Blues Troll began its storied career as a hat. Specifically, it was The Hat which was passed in the early days of B.L.U.E.S. in Chicago, to garner money for the band on nights when no cover charge was in effect. After a while, B.L.U.E.S. began charging admission every night, so the Troll was no longer needed as a worker. The Troll retired to a place of honor over the bar, and was able to absorb thousands of nights of great Chicago blues. During a periodic refurbishing of B.L.U.E.S., the Troll was moved to the storage area for safekeeping. The blues bar business being what it is, nobody remembered to retrieve the Troll when the renovations were done. Although The Troll is a hardy sort and not at all a complainer, he did miss the activity of the bar and especially the blues music, which he could now hear only indistinctly. The Troll hoped that sometime during the next few hundred years he would be able to find a place where he could again be around the wonderful blues music that he loved. When Bill Gilmore was organizing Bill's Blues he went to the B.L.U.E.S. storage room to look for things that might be useful in the new club. Seeing the Troll, Bill asked David Dunning, its creator, if he would be willing to lend the Troll to the new venture for good luck. "Take the damn thing, I've got better stuff", replied Mr. Dunning with his customary directness. Although the Troll's feeling were slightly hurt, he realized that Mr. Dunning's gruff exterior concealed a true pride and affection for his creation. The Blues Troll now resides in a place on honor: the end of the bar at Bill's Blues and is again regaling in the wonderful blues music he came to know and love over the years.
